Your parents live 50 miles from you and your siblings. It’s close enough to get there quickly in case of emergency, but too far to keep tabs on Mom’s diabetes and Dad’s high blood pressure.
You’re not alone: there are an estimated 7 to 10 million long-distance caregivers in the US. And in the twenty-first century, it’s easier than ever to keep track of your parents’ health — with a smartphone app.
There are, in fact, several such apps, but here are two that are available on iPhones, Androids, and online:
CareZone allows you to create lists of medications, keep records of doctor appointments and health concerns, as well as create a list of contacts for everyone in the family.
It also allows you to upload important documents, like insurance cards, power of attorney forms and even advance directives.
You can easily share access to the information with other members of the care team.
CareZone does not currently allow you to assign or volunteer for a task, such as taking Dad to the doctor. But one benefit of apps is that they’re always being updated with new features.
CaringBridge is not as comprehensive as CareZone, but it allows assignment of tasks. It also acts as an information station, where friends and family can log in to check on Dad’s status during a health crisis, a more convenient solution than receiving an endless flow of inquiries via text and phone.
App participants can send each other messages, providing support to the patient and each other in a nonintrusive way.
A health crisis sometimes begets a financial crisis. For this reason, CaringBridge includes the ability to set up a GoFundMe page where friends and family can contribute toward medical expenses — right in the app.
These don’t meet your needs? New apps come into the market every day. As you look for the right app, consider the following:
- Is it available on both iPhone and Android?
- Does it have a friendly user interface?
- Does it allow you to do the most important tasks for your situation, whether it’s keeping track of meds or making sure someone’s available to take Mom to the doctor?
Technology makes life easier, but can’t always provide the right solution. If your parents’ care is becoming overwhelming, the right solution may not be electronic.
